Highway 82 Tour

Exploring Central Mississippi

Discover the unique cities and sites along Highway 82, spanning central Mississippi from the Delta to the Alabama border. Check out Indianola, Greenwood, and Columbus for the B.B. King Museum & Delta Interpretive Center and the Tennessee Williams Home, plus picturesque state parks, golf courses, and restaurants.

Indianola

Set in Sunflower County, Indianola is a lively city located on the western part of the state along the Mississippi Delta.

Must See

As Indianola is set along the Mississippi Blues Trail, and the former stomping grounds of B.B. King, it’s no surprise the B.B. King Museum & Delta Interpretive Center is found right on Second Street.

The center’s main exhibition, “B.B. King: The Man,” regales visitors with Riley B. King’s storied life. Other exhibitions at the B.B. King Museum include “The Delta, 1930s,” “Memphis, 1950s,” and “Artist To Icon, 1960s Forward.”

Local Guide

For a little local cuisine, don’t forget the Indianola Pecan House. Set right on Highway 82, the Original Indianola Pecan House is a Mississippi-owned icon known for one thing: pecans.

Stop by the Indianola Pecan House for some Pecan Fruitcake, Southern Pecan Pie, and some Pecan Praline Cookies. Check out some unique pecans flavors as well, including Southern Trash, Jack Daniel's, and even sugar-free.

Outdoor

Found right on the Mississippi Delta, Leroy Percy State Park is located roughly 35 miles southwest of Indianola. Visitors may boat and fish on Alligator Lake, or try hiking on the Black Bayou Trail and Alligator Lake Trail.

The oldest Mississippi state park, Leroy Percy State Park also offers Disc Golf, 30 picnicking spots, and seasonal hunting.

Greenwood

Continue east on Highway 82, passing Mississippi Valley State University, until you reach Greenwood – approximately 32 miles from Indianola. Known as the Cotton Capital of the World, Greenwood offers plenty to see and do for its visitors.

Must See

Greenwood is teeming with history and Mississippi heritage. Experience town tours like the Robert Johnson Life & Legacy (and mystery) Tour, the Money Road Tour, and a driving tour from the film “The Help.”

Local Guide

If you’re looking for a busy day in Greenwood, here are some suggestions for your itinerary. Check out the Back in the Day Museum, or the Museum of the Mississippi Delta.

For some authentic southern fare, check out local eateries like Spooney’s and KK’s Delicatessen – plus some upscale places like Crystal Grill, Lusco’s, and Delta Bistro.

Outdoor

For some more outdoor fun on the water, head for Hugh White State Park – set on Grenada Lake, about an hour northeast from Greenwood along State Route 7.

Hugh White State Park offers boating, waterskiing, and fishing for bass, crappie, bream, and catfish on the 64,000-acre Grenada Lake. Golfers can check out Dogwoods Golf Course, the onsite 18-hole course.

Columbus

Here comes the real stretch of the Mississippi road trip. Continue east on Highway 82 for over 100 miles, eventually reaching Columbus near the Alabama border.

You’ll pass fun stops like the John Grisham Room and Mississippi State University in Starkville before coming up on Possum Town.

Must See

Columbus really has something for everyone. Race fans can hit the Magnolia Motor Speedway, and of course the Columbus Speedway. Those looking for some cultural sites find haven at the R. E. Hunt Museum & Cultural Center, and the Tennessee Williams Home.
