Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail

Originally established in the late 1980s, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is an assemblage of public golf courses located throughout Alabama. The RTJ Golf Trail encompasses 26 golf courses across 11 sites in total.

Alabama’s Gulf of Mexico shore is home to two courses along the RTJ Trail. Set on the Mobile Bay in Point Clear, the Lakewood Golf Club features two 18-hole courses – the Azalea and the Dogwood.

Set less than 30 minutes from Foley, Lakewood has hosted previous players like President Ford and Bob Hope.

Set along Interstate 10 in Mobile, the Magnolia Grove Golf Course features 54 holes across three courses. The LPGA Tour-hosting Crossings course, the par-3 Short Course, and the Falls course – the only par-71 course on the RTJ Trail.

Further north, but still in southern Alabama, several other courses serve the RTJ Trail.

Highland Oaks Golf Course features three nine-hole championship courses, plus a par-3 nine-hole short course. Set in Dothan, Highland Oaks Golf is home to the Highlands, Magnolia, and Marshwood courses.

Another 36-hole complex, Cambrian Ridge is located in Greenville – and features the Canyon, Loblolly, Sherling, and the short course.

Residents and visitors of Montgomery, head to nearby Prattville for the Capitol Hill Golf Course. Capitol Hill offers three championship courses: the 18-hole Judge, Legislator, and Senator courses.

Central Alabama yields more of the RTJ experience. Set in Opelika, the 54-hole Grand National Golf Course features the Links and Lake courses – the latter of which hugs the 600-acre Lake Saugahatchee.

Birmingham boasts two sites along the trail. The 54-hole Oxmoor Valley Golf Course is divided amongst the Ridge, Valley, and short courses. And one of the world’s longest courses, the Ross Bridge Golf Course features 18-holes – and plenty of golf carts.

Alabama’s northern region yields the remaining courses along the RTJ. Set in Glencoe near Gadsden, Silver Lakes is another 36-hole complex – appropriately split amongst the Backbreaker, Heartbreaker, and Mindbreaker courses.

Found near Huntsville, Hampton Cove’s own Highland, River, and short courses offer 54 holes amongst a Scottish Links design. And found close to Russellville, The Shoals is home to two 18-hole courses – the lengthy Fighting Joe and the traditional Schoolmaster.

Named for the famed golf course architect, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail takes players from the scenic shores of the Gulf Coast to the bustle of Birmingham and the tree-lined bluffs of the Tennessee River – making it one of the best tours of Alabama there is.
